As a general rule of thumb, the chandelier should be positioned about 30 to 36 inches above the table surface. You want enough clearance to get in and out of your seat without bonking your head, but you also want the chandelier to be a star in the show.
If you have the height clearance, chandeliers are versatile and can be used in virtually every room in a home, from the living room, to the hallway, or even the bathroom.
The bottom of the fixture should hang 30 to 36 inches above a table if you have an 8-foot ceiling. If your ceiling is higher than 8 feet, raise the chandelier 3 inches for every extra foot of ceiling height. For example, if you have a 10-foot ceiling, the chandelier height above the table should be 36 to 42 inches.
Larger chandeliers may need extra support. A ceiling can't handle chandeliers heavier than 50 pounds so it's best to install an expandable chandelier or fan brace between the ceiling joists
As to non-electric dangers, if not properly secured, the chandelier could fall on your head. Although the probability certainly exists, the odds are very much against it.
