Music LED Controller

The first way to do this is to use a strip light controller that has a built-in microphone. Once you plug in the controller, it will detect the sound and the lights will change accordingly.
These work by controlling the brightness of each channel (red, green and blue, plus white for RGBW) to create the desired colour mix. So, with an RGB LED strip light and controller, you can increase the brightness of the red and blue channels while turning the green down completely to create the colour purple.
Literally all you have to do is put the two wires coming out of the LED into the two speaker terminals on a speaker. Strip the plastic off of the wire with the wire strippers so you can twist it with the speaker wire. You'll notice that the LED illuminates with each music beat.
You need a constant-current LED driver if your lights are wired in series, like ground and decking lights. You need a constant-voltage LED driver if they'll be wired in parallel, like with LED tape or commercial LED strip lights.
